Google replaces hints of Chrome OS hardware from Acer, Dell, and HP with even better hints

As you may recall from a few days ago , Google offered some of the clearest evidence of Chrome OS hardware from major manufacturers yet by letting some build configurations for Acer, Dell, and HP slip out into its public code repository. Now, that wasn’t too surprising considering that each of the companies have already made their Chrome OS intentions pretty clear, but Google seems to have done a bit of backtracking nonetheless. It’s replaced the files with what you see above (the files, not the Caruso), which now suggest that Chrome OS hardware is coming from the likes of Amiga, Commodore and Atari

Canonical making full-fledged Ubuntu tablet push in early 2011

Were Ubuntu Linux ported to any device you could name, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise, but developer Canonical intends to release a tablet-specific branch of the OS this time. Like previous efforts on netbook and MID , you can expect the new version to be something of an Ubuntu Light , but with new multitouch gestures and an on-screen keyboard lovingly baked in. Based on Ubuntu 10.10 “Maverick Meerkat,” the tablet version will actually be rolled into Ubuntu Light later on, but right now the company’s busy romancing hardware providers — Freescale, Marvell, and Texas Instruments have all signed deals, and both Intel and Pixel Qi will reportedly bring power-saving tech to the table.

Thankfully, Expert Reviews made a special trip to Sweden to see the company’s Android-powered television in action, and now we know what the unit actually does — it switches between an Android interface and a discrete TV mode without actually mixing the two in any appreciable fashion

Safari 5 to join Steve onstage Monday for WWDC?

According to a report from French blog MacGeneration , one of the announcements on tap for Monday’s WWDC 2010 keynote (which we’ll be covering live , by the way) is a major update for Safari — namely, version 5. If you believe the docs the site has obtained, there are more than a few big changes coming, including Bing now alongside Yahoo! and Google search options, a new “Safari Reader” for better / easier RSS reading (we’re hoping they’re taking a cue from Google on this), 25 percent faster JavaScript performance and DNS prefetching (hello, Chrome), improved HTML5 support (no big surprise there), and new developer tools which we assume will be along the lines of Firebug or Chrome’s developer helpers.

Innoversal’s Pixel Qi-based tablet prototype: $530 for the display of your dreams

We already had the opportunity to sit down and tinker with a slew of Pixel Qi -based prototype devices here in Taipei, but one in particular managed to catch our eye in a rather surprising location.
