HTC running low on AMOLED stock, will add SLCD to the mix for some models
AMOLED displays in phones haven’t necessarily lived up to their promise; they’d been billed as the be-all, end-all answer for clarity, vibrance, and low power consumption, but in reality, the latest and greatest LCDs look just as good, offer similar viewing angles, have little to no impact on battery life, and fare far better in direct sunlight. We’ve been able to confirm this evening that HTC will be adding an additional supplier of displays later this year — Sony — which will be delivering its Super TFT LCD tech as a mobile exclusive (initially, at least) to key HTC handsets, some of which are already in the marketplace.

The great thing about the HD2 is that it remains one of the most gorgeous pieces of smartphone hardware ever released — but as long as it’s saddled with the dead OS walking known as Windows Mobile 6.5 , its stature in the power user community is perpetually stuck in first gear, no matter how pretty HTC has managed to make it. To that end, some of those very same power users have been working tirelessly to salvage the beast and shoehorn Android on there, but they’ve been tripped up by some errors involving the phone’s Snapdragon core and the so-called HaRET tool used to boot Linux from Windows CE-based devices that have made a proper port seem all but impossible

US Cellular adds HTC Desire and BlackBerry Bold in August, teases BlackBerry 9670 for ‘later this year’
We were extremely close to cramping our sarcasm muscle with all the faux excitement we had to drum up for the 3.2-inch Acclaim , but US Cellular has now come back with word that it’ll soon count HTC’s Desire among its roster of phones. The Desire, which is mooted to be coming to other smaller carriers like Cellular South, will debut in August alongside the BlackBerry Bold.
EVO 4G gets 802.11n WiFi by changing two lines of code
The EVO 4G has a lot of weight in the smartphone arena thanks to WiMAX and that 4.3-inch screen, but though its Broadcom BCM4329 silicon also technically supports 802.11n WiFi over 2.4GHz, the protocol was disabled for some reason. Thankfully it’s just a matter of ten characters to enable greater throughput, as the fine folks at xda-developers recently discovered. Better yet, you don’t even have to edit those characters yourself — if your EVO’s nice and rooted and the word “brick” doesn’t inspire fear, you’ll find instructions and flash-ready ZIP files at our source link
Verizon’s Droid Eris goes on permanent vacation
You might have figured that the recent update to Android 2.1 would’ve given Verizon’s Droid Eris a few months of additional shelf life, but alas, it was not to be; the phone is no longer available from Verizon’s online store, and we’d assume that any remaining inventory in the field will dwindle to nothingness in the coming weeks. If anything, it seems like the device — basically a tweaked Hero — would be able to effectively soldier on indefinitely for $50 or so on contract, but maybe the carrier’s intent on keeping Android a higher-end affair for the time being.
