Google is following in Nokia‘s footsteps today by offering its users a simple-to-use DIY app maker. Employing a design scheme that relies on visual blocks rather than oodles of arcane code, the App Inventor — still in Beta, of course — has functions for “just about anything” you can do with an Android handset, including access to GPS and phone functionality

Another day, another company pleading guilty to their role in a massive global price-fixing conspiracy surrounding the MSRP of LCDs. The Taiwan-based HannStar Display agreed (grudgingly, we surmise) this week to cough up a whopping $30 million for its role in the scheme, marking the seventh company to ” plead or agree to plead guilty as a result of the department’s investigation into the LCD industry.” All told, the US Department of Justice has seen some $890 million paid out and 17 executives charged, with HannStar in particular being pegged for violating the Sherman Act during its participation in the conspiracy from September 2001 to January 2006.

Mystery Nokia slider shows off proto-Symbian^3 one last time, commits cellular suicide (video)

We never did quite get the name of Nokia‘s prototype slider — it certainly isn’t the C7 , and it’s apparently not the N9 — but regardless of what you call our dearly departed, its journey is over . In what will no doubt be a fairly familiar tale to readers everywhere, TechnoBuffalo saw the phone remotely wiped right before their eyes, and Negri Electronics ( our original source ) says they’ve got private investigators breathing down their necks for the device

Did Nokia just confirm a MeeGo tablet?

We’ve heard the rumors, hell, we’ve even seen Intel reference designs (pictured) running the MeeGo OS. But now we seem to have confirmation that a proper MeeGo tablet built by Nokia is on the way. Anssi Vanjoki , Nokia’s newly crowned chief of Mobile Solutions, said the following in an interview captured by the Wall Street Journal : Due to the spread of cloud computing and new advances in electronics and network technology, mobile devices will increasingly move beyond smartphones to include other computer-like gadgets such as tablets, and the MeeGo platform will be an important asset for Nokia

Droid X ad pokes fun at iPhone 4 antenna troubles

The world of corporate cheap shots has today been enriched in its number with one supersized ad for one supersized phone. BGR reports that Motorola took out a full-page spread in the New York Times on this final day of June, which was ostensibly dedicated to promoting the positives of its mighty Droid X.

The mechanism that opens and closes the articulated display is pretty neat — but otherwise, there isn’t much from Negri Electronics ‘ video of its mysteriously-obtained Nokia prototype that is likely to raise many eyebrows.

If Nokia‘s N8 is just too much smartphone for you then perhaps you’d like to take it down a notch with the C7. As part of the C-series of Nokia devices, you can expect it to trim some of the specs off the N8, but not much as the flagship device of the family .
