Nikon D5000

The Nikon D5000 ($730, body only 5/09) is a perfectly good little camera that’s slated into Nikon’s 2009 product line right between the D40 ($450, including lens) and the D90 ($975, no lens). In terms of features, size, weight and price, the D5000 is right in the middle of the two.

The D5000 offers the technical image quality of Nikon’s best DX cameras like the D300 and D90, with a size almost as small and light as the D40.

Sadly, the D5000 has only the limited controls of the D40 and most of the price of the D90, which is why I personally prefer either the D40 or D90, but if the D5000 adds features particularly important to you, by all means, get a D5000.

Something the D5000 does exceptionally well is work quietly. When I first shot it, I noticed how quiet it was, and a week later when I found the D5000′s Quiet Mode, I was astounded! It’s far quieter than any other SLR, and is at least as quiet as the LEICA rangefinder cameras.
